Warning: Dog Flu

     Because this is a newly emerging disease (discovered in 2004), almost all dogs, regardless of breed or age, are susceptible to infection and have no immunity. Virtually all dogs that are exposed to the virus become infected and nearly 80% show clinical signs of disease.

     Dog flu is a viral infection that is spread by direct contact, therefore, you should be careful in allowing your dog to play or be around another dog that doesn't appear healthy.  Even with precaution, a dog may carry the disease without signs of illness and can transmit it.  What's worse, we can carry it on our clothes, etc.

     Dog flu does NOT affect cats or humans.

     If your dog displays evidence of a fever, runny nose or cough, call your veterinarian immediately !   This flu is deadly and fast treatment is crucial!  We cannot stress enough the importance of getting veterinary care at the first sign of respiratory disease, as early care does seem related to recovery.

     Your vet will use antibiotics and fluids to deal with secondary bacterial infections, and in turn, this will allow your dog to better fight the viral infection.

     At this time a vaccine product is in development, but to date, is not on the market. Contact your vet and have him or her put you on a calling list so that when it becomes available you will be notified.
